Elizabeth Lawrence (1904-1985) lived quietly in North Carolina most of her life, and there she not only made a garden but became celebrated for her garden writing, particularly her famous book THE LITTLE BULBS and her longtime column in the Charlotte Observer. Lawrence never married, but had a wide circle of friends and, in particular, correspondents, including Katharine White (their letters have been published) and Eudora Welty.
